PM MOBILE TALK at the School of the Displaced
The School of Kyiv – Kyiv Biennale 2015

Lecture by Helge Lunde director of ICORN, the International Cities of Refuge Network at October 10, 19:00, Visual Culture Research Center, 44 Hlybochytska st., Kyiv, Ukraine

HOSPITALITY, CREATIVITY, SOLIDARITY: IS THERE A RISING ROLE FOR CITIES WHEN NATIONS FALL APART?

Nation states seems increasingly paralyzed, if not obsolete, when facing the major threats of today’s world: climate change, terrorism, poverty, trafficking, not to mention the refugee crisis currently challenging Europe’s entire social and political order. 20 years ago, when inaugurating the International Parliament of Writers’ Cities of Asylum Network, the French philosopher Jacques Derrida asked: « Could the city, equipped with new rights and greater sovereignty, open up new horizons of possibility previous undreamt of by international state law?”

In his lecture, Helge Lunde, executive director of ICORN, the International Cities of Refuge Network, takes Derrida’s « On Cosmopolitanism » as a starting point, drawing upon current urban theory and the experiences from growing international networks, and asks if and how cities can connect globally to make a real difference for human rights and freedom of expression.

The lecture will be held in a frame of the School of the Displaced, which features contemporary artists who themselves are affected both personally and politically by forms of displacement.

The School is co-curated by Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky of Perpetuum Mobilε and co-ordinated in Kyiv by the Visual Culture Research Center (VCRC).
