Saari Residence and Saastamoinen Foundation have joined forces to help Perpetuum Mobile’s Artists at Risk (AR) programme to host art-practitioners who are the target of politically motivated threats and persecution in their home country.

The joint residency of three months consists of a two-month residence at the Saari Residence in Mynämäki, Finland funded by Kone Foundation followed by one month in Helsinki funded by the Saastamoinen Foundation, curated and hosted by Perpetuum Mobile / Artists at Risk (AR).

The residency includes an apartment, a workspace, a monthly grant, travel, visa and insurance costs, limited budget for a production and legal costs. The residency can host a family.

Hosts

The Saari Residence is maintained by Kone Foundation and hosts both artists and researchers. The Saari Residence is located in the Western Finnish agricultural region in South-West Finland, the Mietoinen district of Mynämäki, which is ca. 30 km north from Turku.

The Saari Residence offers artists and researchers the opportunity for peace and tranquillity, and the possibility to focus on their creative work undisturbed. The Saari Residence’s historical surroundings and peaceful location near a nature reserve and bird wetlands help to diminish all distractions.

Artists and researchers also get a chance to meet each other at the Saari Residence. From September to April, eight artists and researchers of different disciplines work at the residence for two-month periods at a time. There is also the Saari Residence’s Invited Artist who works in the residency from September to April. Consequently, opportunities for interaction between these often very different residents abound, as does the possibility for breaking the boundaries between their disciplines. The Saari Well is an opportunity for artists and researchers working at the residence to meet, share, and leave their mark on each other’s thoughts, work and the Saari Residence. Please read more about the Saari Well here.

Saastamoinen Foundation works for the benefit of Finnish science and art. It among Finland’s most important art buyers and enablers of scientific research. The core values are  transparency, internationalisation, expertise, and continuity, and these values shape the support we offer to artists, researchers, art institutions and ground-breaking scientific projects.

Perpetuum Mobilε (PM) is a curatorial vehicle which brings together art, practice and enquiry. It acts as a conduit and engine to re-imagine certain basic historical, theoretical as well as practical paradigms in fields which often exist in disparate institutional frames and territories. PM has worked extensively in the Nordic, European and international field.

Perpetuum Mobile develops longer-term thematic projects which include conferences, workshops, residencies, small and large exhibitions, festivals, public and street art, publications, films and new formats. PM’s longer-term thematic platforms include the Re-Aligned Project, the Perpetual Pavilion, the Perestroika Project, The Arts Assembly, Artists at Risk, Sino-Fi and Mobile Talks.

Facilities

The Saari Residence is an old manor constructed in 1779 and extensive renovations of the manor were completed in 2008. The resident accommodation is distributed among three buildings and there are nine apartments of various sizes, with the largest being reserved for artists and researchers doing written work. There is a shared kitchen in one of the buildings, all other apartments have their own fully fitted kitchen, whether full-size, mini or kitchenette. All apartments have their own shower WC.

The manor barn, built in 1858 to house 100 cattle, has been restored as a multi-faceted workspace for artists of various disciplines. There are three studios, a dance studio and a woodworking shop in the barn.
