ARTISTS at RISK (AR) is a network-institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts. AR is dedicated to mapping the field of persecuted visual art practitioners, facilitating their safe passage from their countries of origin, hosting them at “AR-Safe Haven Residencies” and curating related projects such as the AR Pavilion.
PUBLIC CALL for ARTISTS AT RISK
This public call for art practitioners at risk is open and applications can be made at any time. Art professionals at risk of grievous suppression of freedom of expression, persecution or politically motivated threats to their basic freedoms may apply here artistsatrisk.org/apply/. Please only submit an application if you are at serious risk. Eligible candidates usually face sustained persecution, dislocation of residence, unjust imprisonment, torture or ongoing death threats.
Artists at Risk (AR) welcomes AR-Residents as honoured visiting art professionals. AR-Residencies enable practitioners to take a “breather” as a respite from the threats they face in their home country or to use the programme as a “stepping stone” to re-orient their professional lives.
AR-Residents are selected on the basis of the applications materials and background checks with the help of specialists from the relevant regional and international fields of arts and human rights. References as consultations with the AR-Advisory Committees of prospective hosting AR-Residencies also play a role.
The scope of AR
Artists at Risk (AR) is designed as an institution of global scope, and is undergoing rapid growth. Expanding from its established residency programme in Helsinki, it has developed AR-Safe Haven Residencies in 20 locations in 16 countries. Although Artists at Risk (AR) was the first residency institution of its kind dedicated to the visual arts, it has accepted candidates from other fields including film, theatre and dance from its beginnings. As an international network of residencies that includes close curatorial support, AR remains unique. In coordination with partners and other networks, it is building a horizontal network of AR-Safe Havens around the world, as a global advocate for art practitioners at risk.
Artists at Risk (AR) is a Perpetuum Mobilεzation
Perpetuum Mobilε (PM), co-founded and directed by Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen (in alternating order), is a curatorial platform which brings together art, practice and enquiry.
