Wagers are made.
Wars are waged.
Entire cities of peoples are effaced.
That’s the balance of the wager.
That is the part that is confiscated, when the paper towers fall.
When the armies roll, when the generals brawl.
It is us.
Hostages to powers beyond recall.
Rebuilding in the ruins thrall
What is left of children’s fantasies
ARTISTS at RISK (AR) is an institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts. It is dedicated to mapping the field of persecuted art practitioners, facilitating their safe passage from their countries of origin, hosting them at “AR-Safe Haven Residencies” and curating associated art projects and exhibitions. To achieve this, selected key figures are granted short or long-term AR-Residencies – arriving not as asylum seekers, but as invited and honoured visiting art professionals. These are art actors who not only greatly enrich their host countries, but may be at the heart of rebuilding their often war-torn regions of origin.
AR is designed as a new institution of global scope, and is currently undergoing rapid growth. Building on the model established at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki, it is developing an expanding network of AR-Safe Havens in Berlin, Athens, Cambridge UK, western Finland, the Provence, Oslo, Madrid and Barcelona, among other localities. Artists at Risk (AR) is the only project of its kind in the visual arts, coordinating with partner-networks in other art forms to build a type of PEN-International for artists at risk.
Perpetuum Mobilε (PM) acts as a conduit and engine to re-imagine certain basic historical, theoretical as well as practical paradigms in fields which often exist in disparate institutional frames and territories. Co-founded and co-directed by Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen (in alternating order) since 2007, PM is a curatorial platform which brings together art, practice and enquiry. Perpetuum Mobile develops longer-term thematic projects which come to include conferences, workshops, residencies, small and large exhibitions, festivals, public and street art, publications, films and new formats. Larger-scale initiatives include Artists at Risk (AR), The Re-Aligned Project, the Perpetual Romani Pavilion, the Perestroika Project, The Arts Assembly, Perpetuum Labs, Sino-Fi, Pluriversity and Mobile Talks. PM has worked extensively in the European and international field of art.
