Benjamin Abras is an Afro-Brazilian visual artist, dancer and performer whose work explores black culture and the restrictions placed upon the black body. Moving from his first residency period at AR-Tangiers, he is the second resident at the fast-developing Artists at Risk (AR)-Safe Haven Tunis being developed in close cooperation with Art Veda. Welcome again, Benjamin!
Grounding Abras in the Tunisian context, Art Veda is a non-profit artistic organisation and also our partner in Artists at Risk (AR) – A European Network of Safe Havens (AR-ENSH).
At AR-Tunis, Abras is continuing his practice of situated artistic research focussed on movement and the body in social space, which he developed at AR-Tangiers. Working alongside the people of Tunis, he is researching local performance traditions, gathering stories and situating his findings in the geographical and historical context of this ancient city.
In particular, Abras is currently researching the history of slavery and ongoing social issues for his play “KAHLOUCH”, which documents and describes racism in Tunisia. Collaborating with local black Tunisians who will perform their stories through movement and poetry, he aims to create a space for healing and awakening. Alongside writing “KAHLOUCH”, Abras is working on “Humid Hélios”, a book of songs and poems which will accompany the performance.
Abras arrived in Tunisia with a grant from Protect Defenders.eu that AR had received to support him at AR-Tangiers, Morocco. Currently, AR supports him through the AR Covid-19 Emergency Fund. Please help AR support artists like Abras, by donating here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/artistsatrisk
