In English (translated):

Ukrainian actor and theatre director Sasha Denisova escaped censorship in Russia thanks to the first No Callarem Artists at Risk residency at Fabra i Coats.

The actor Alexey Yudnikov and the director and playwright Sasha Denisova, of Ukrainian origin, have been working together for years in an independent theatre in the centre of Moscow, where they thought of the stage as a space of resistance. The Russian government’s censorship with their works of social criticism intensified up until the outbreak of the war with Ukraine.

« I have colleagues who have stayed in Moscow, but there it is impossible to say anything, you have to shut your mouth. » – Alexey Yudnikov, actor

His theatre was very critical of power, against Putin’s government and the Russian oligarchs.

« We tried to create something, but all our efforts were destroyed. Our play was closed down when the war started. » – Sasha Denysova, playwright

No Callarem Artists at Risk Residencies

In this situation, both of them applied for a residency with the NGO Artists at Risk, which since 2013 has built a worldwide network to help persecuted artists fleeing oppression or war. Since the Russian attack began, the organisation has been working to take in more than 1,750 artists at risk from the conflict in Ukraine and 360 more dissident artists at risk of persecution, imprisonment or torture in Russia and Belarus. Among the institutions that have joined the project are the ICUB, from the Department of Innovation, Knowledge and Visual Arts, and the CCCB, which, through the platform No Callarem has made it possible for Yudnikov and Denysova to arrive in Barcelona.

‘La meva mare i la invasió a gran escala’ (‘My Mother and the Large-Scale Invasion’)

Currently, Alexey Yudnikov and Sasha Denysova are immersed in a creative process in Fabra i Coats, where they have been living and working since last July, pending the current situation of the war in Kyiv, where they still have relatives. In fact, they are working on a text inspired by the story of the author’s mother, Olga Ivanovna, 81 years old, who refused to leave the family home in Kyiv when the conflict broke out, and who lives daily with the drone attacks, trying to carry on with her daily life.

« Yesterday my mother told me to share all this with the people of Barcelona. » – Sasha Denysova, playwright

Under the title ‘My mother and the large-scale invasion’, they will tell the story of all those civilians who live day by day in the midst of the conflict. Yudnikov will be the only performer on stage and will be in the shoes of around twenty characters.

« It wasn’t my choice, but I’m happy to be able to say what I think, even though I’m sitting there with a gun pointed at my head. » – Alexey Yudnikov, actor

The play will be presented at the end of the year at the CCCB.

In Catalan (original):

Alexey Yudnikov, actor

L’obra es presentarà a finals d’any al CCCB.
