Soon after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts made a donation of the generous sum of $100,000 to Artists at Risk (AR). We would like to express our great respect and appreciation for this highly important and timely donation in support of artists and cultural workers affected by the war!

It has been an incredibly busy year at AR. The momentum generated by this early donation greatly aided AR in handling the large volumes of applications from artists for emergency support. To date this includes over 1950 applications from Ukrainian principals (i.e. not counting dependents), 545 from oppositional Belarusian and Russian principals, and 420 from Afghan principals. AR has successfully relocated 325 principal Ukrainian applicants to almost every European country and 84 Belarusian and Russian oppositional principals to countries around the world. Dozens of Afghan artists at risk have also received our support. The grant, we feel, has been put to good use.

We are very grateful to the Andy Warhol Foundation for this generous support! Our heartfelt thank you!

The Warhol Foundation stands in solidarity with the arts community and is committed to working towards its safety, while facilitating continued creative practice when possible. Fortifying the work and well-being of artists through the organizations that support them is at the heart of the Foundation’s grantmaking. We are grateful to these organizations for their critical work during a time of great hardship.

As mentioned in a previous post, donations from the USA were made possible by The Teiger Foundation, which set a precedent (and paved the bureaucratic way), which inspired the Andy Warhol Foundation’s contribution.

2023 is set to be another intense year — with Iran and Kurdistan (Syria, Iran, Turkey, Iraq) currently in turmoil. It is the season to be generous! Donate now: artistsatrisk.org/donations/
