PRESS TEXT

In English (translation):

Hanna Brotherus’s dance film raises funds for children in Ukraine

On the anniversary of the beginning of the war in Ukraine on 24 February, the dance film 365 degrees — Dance for Ukraine, directed by choreographer Hanna Brotherus, will be shown on Yle. The film features three Ukrainian dance artists who came to Finland for a residency in the autumn for security reasons.

The Ukrainian dance company Ethno Contemporary Ballet, consisting of Nina Bulgakova, Anastasiia Mostova and Kateryna Zhuravlova, arrived in Helsinki last October. The residencies for the Kharkov artists were organised by the Artists at Risk network and the Dance Information Centre. The Information Centre used the leftover funds from its discontinued exchange programme between Finland and Russia to make the security residency possible.

After the residency, Bulgakova, Mostova and Zhuravlova stayed in Finland and have continued to work with Finnish dance companies.

Their work includes the dance film 365 degrees — Dance for Ukraine, directed by choreographer Hanna Brotherus.

The film and the ‘Making of 365’ programme, which tells the story behind the film, will be shown on Yle on 24 February on Areena, TV1, Teema and Yle Fem. The broadcasts will be accompanied by a fundraising campaign to help Ukrainians through UNICEF. In addition to the Ukrainian dancers, the film features Elina Häyrynen, Mirva Mäkinen and Saida Solla.

«Hanna and I met in connection with our performance Say it quieter if you can in Hurjaruuth», says dancer-choreographer Nina Bulgakova. «The next time we met, the idea for a joint project was born: we wanted to make a dance film.»

365 Degrees — Dance for Ukraine is a film that reminds us of the power of hope. A group of six dancers brings to life the desire to see beyond violence and darkness. Through movement and music, the work seeks to unlock the core of human connection that keeps hope alive.

«The film depicts hope, sisterhood, the importance of community in war — for me, the film is also very much about pain», Bulgakova says.

«The war felt overwhelming, as I’m sure it did for many others. I felt it was important to find a way to respond — for me, this was through meeting the Ukrainian dancers», says Hanna Brotherus.

The Ukrainian-language version of Taikabox’s Kalevala-themed children’s performance on tour in Finland

Nina Bulgakova is also featured in Taikabox’s Born Old, which has been created in a new Ukrainian-language version. Born Old, created for children by choreographer Tanja Råman and originally in Finnish, tells the Kalevala story of the birth of the world and Väinämöinen’s adventures at the beginning of time.

«In Born Old, I not only get to dance, but for the first time I get to speak and sing to the audience, both in Ukrainian and in Finnish», says Nina Bulgakova.

Bulgakova says there are many similarities between Finnish and Ukrainian myths and stories.

«The Kalevala, like other epics about the creation of the world, is based on the belief that nature is stronger than man. Our ancestors wanted to warn us against a disrespectful and wasteful attitude towards the Earth», she says.

The Ukrainian-language version of Born Old will tour Finland in February, mainly targeting Ukrainian children living in Finland. The performance on 21 February can also be watched via livestream.

Alpo Aaltokoski offers his studio to Ethno Contemporary Ballet

Alpo Aaltokoski has also supported Ethno Contemporary Ballet’s work in Helsinki, for example by offering his studio in Kaapelitehdas to the group. In early March, the Alpo Aaltokoski Company and Ethno Contemporary Ballet will perform together at Kanneltalo in Helsinki.

In December, the Ukrainian artists collaborated with the Target Helsinki ensemble to make a dance film, which you can watch here.

Hanna Brotheruksen tanssielokuvan avulla kerätään varoja Ukrainan lapsille

Ukrainan sodan alkamisen vuosipäivänä 24. helmikuuta Ylen kanavilla nähdään koreografi Hanna Brotheruksen ohjaama tanssielokuva 365 astetta — Tanssi Ukrainalle. Elokuvassa on mukana kolme ukrainalaista tanssitaiteilijaa, jotka tulivat Suomeen turvaresidenssiin syksyllä.

Ukrainalainen tanssiryhmä Ethno Contemporary Ballet, eli tanssitaiteilijat Nina Bulgakova, Anastasiia Mostova ja Kateryna Zhuravlova, tulivat Helsinkiin viime lokakuussa. Harkovalaistaiteilijat järjestettiin turvaresidenssiin Suomeen Artists at Risk -verkoston ja Tanssin tiedotuskeskuksen toimesta.

He ovat mukana muun muassa koreografi Hanna Brotheruksen ohjaamassa tanssielokuvassa 365 astetta – Tanssi Ukrainalle.

”Kohtasimme Hannan kanssa esityksemme Say it quieter if you can yhteydessä Hurjaruuthissa”, tanssija-koreografi Nina Bulgakova kertoo. ”Seuraavassa tapaamisessamme syntyi idea yhteisestä projektista: halusimme tehdä tanssielokuvan.”

365 astetta – Tanssi Ukrainalle -elokuva muistuttaa toivon voimasta. Yhteensä kuuden tanssijan ryhmä tuo näkyviin halun nähdä väkivallan ja pimeyden yli. Liikkeen ja musiikin kautta teos pyrkii avaamaan sitä inhimillisen yhteyden ydintä, jolla toivo säilyy elossa.

”Elokuva kuvaa toivoa, sisaruutta, yhteisön merkitystä sodassa – minulle elokuva käsittelee vahvasti myös kipua”, Bulgakova kuvailee.

”Sotatilanne tuntui pakahduttavalta, kuten varmasti monista muistakin. Koin tärkeäksi löytää jonkun tavan reagoida – minulle tämä tapahtui ukrainalaisten tanssijoiden kohtaamisen kautta”, Hanna Brotherus kertoo.

Ukrainankielinen versio Taikaboxin Kalevala-aiheisesta lastenesityksestä Suomen-kiertueelle

Nina Bulgakova on mukana myös Taikabox-ryhmän teoksessa Born Old, josta on tehty uusi, ukrainankielinen versio. Koreografi Tanja Råmanin lapsille luoma, alun perin suomenkielinen Born Old kertoo Kalevalan tarinan maailman synnystä ja Väinämöisen seikkailuista aikojen alussa.

Ukrainankielinen Born Old tekee helmikuun aikana Suomen-kiertueen, pääasiallisena kohderyhmänään Suomessa asuvat ukrainalaislapset. 21. helmikuuta toteutettavaa esitystä pääsee seuraamaan myös livestriimin kautta.

Alpo Aaltokoski tarjonnut studionsa Ethno Contemporary Ballet’n käyttöön

Myös Alpo Aaltokoski on tukenut Ethno Contemporary Ballet’n työskentelyä Helsingissä tarjoamalla esimerkiksi studiotaan Kaapelitehtaalla ryhmän käyttöön. Maaliskuun alussa Alpo Aaltokoski Company ja Ethno Contemporary Ballet esiintyvät yhteisillassa Kanneltalossa Helsingissä.

Joulukuussa ukrainalaisartistit tekivät yhteistyössä Target Helsinki ensemblen kanssa tanssielokuvan, jonka voit katsoa täällä.
