The war in Ukraine comes to Barcelona’s stages

Sasha Denisova and Alexei Yudnikov premiere monologue under the bombs

When the war broke out in Ukraine, actor Alexei Yudnikov had been living in Moscow for three decades, surrounded by family and friends and working with the Teatr.doc collective. A life that was shattered into a thousand pieces after the Putin-ordered invasion, in the wake of which Yudnikov, a Russian speaker with a Ukrainian passport, discovered he was living in « an enemy country ». This is what the veteran actor said at the presentation of Ma mare i la invasió total, the monologue he has been preparing for the last few months under the direction of another Ukrainian exile, Sasha Denísova.

The play, which will premiere on 4 March at the CCCB theatre to coincide with the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, was made possible thanks to the first AR-Barcelona residency. The programme has allowed Sasha Denisova to reside in Barcelona from September to November 2022, while Yudnikov has done so since July last year, during which time he has been able to rehearse at the Fabra i Coats.

Ma mare i la invasió total is a monologue with a flesh-and-blood protagonist: Olga Ivanovna, Sasha Denisova’s mother. This 81-year-old woman, who suffered the bombings of the Second World War as a child, must now face the horrors of another conflict from Kyiv, the city where she decided to stay when the war began, which she tells her daughter daily via WhatsApp. The story, narrated by Yudnikov through different characters, brings together various conversations between the elderly Olga and military men, ex-husbands and even her own daughter, Sasha, in a piece that speaks of human fragility and resistance.

This plot inevitably proposes a very personal work, both of the director and of Yudnikov, as his mother and brother also remain in Ukraine. This situation causes the actor great distress, he admits, knowing that he is safe and free to work while his family remains in the middle of a war zone. The play he will perform can be « a therapy to overcome this trauma », the actor said.

If Yudnikov’s decision to go into exile causes him doubts, his conviction to continue using dramaturgy as an instrument has not waned in the slightest. It was precisely this attitude as a member of Teatr.doc that pushed him to flee Moscow. The Russian theatre collective, the only one without public funding, has spoken out against Putin’s policies, which has cost it numerous sanctions in recent years. « Opponents are constantly asking themselves what is better, whether to act from within or to keep up the fight from outside, » Yudnikov explains.

The performance of Ma mare i la invasió total will be the culmination of a combined effort by the organisations Artist at Risk and No Callarem, the CCCB and the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, organisations that have joined forces to offer artistic residency to the two Ukrainian artists in order not only to protect their lives, but to offer them a place to pursue their careers and thus prevent them from being cut short by the war.

This is not the first time Artists at Risk and No Callarem have collaborated with Barcelona City Council on a residency. In 2019 they did the same with Kenyan rapper, poet and LGTBIQ activist Grace Munene with a protection programme that currently promotes 28 residencies in 26 different cities and which will bring a new artist residency to Barcelona in the coming months.
