PRESS TEXT

In English (translation):

Artist refugees from the war in Ukraine living in Alcobaça inaugurate a group exhibition

The Central-Periférica artistic residency centre, in Alcobaça, will once again show works by artists who left Ukraine due to the invasion by Russia

Longing as Struggle – saudade as struggle, in a free translation into Portuguese – is the title of the exhibition that opens in Alcobaça, this Friday, March 31, at 5 pm, by artists who have the status of war refugees.

Valerie Karpan, Oleksandra Lytvyn, Maryna Marinichenko, Clemens Poole, Yehor Polishchuk, Oleksii Voitikh and Kamila Yanar left Ukraine due to the Russian invasion and have been in Alcobaça for over nine months, in the context of an artistic residency.

The exhibition Longing as Struggle brings together installation, drawing, video and photography works developed since May last year at Central-Periférica, a residency and artistic research centre founded in August 2022 by the cultural organisation Babel, located at Rua Dr. Nascimento e Souza.

“They explored the ruins of industrial complexes in the region, observed the urban outskirts, looked for signs of deterioration in the very house they inhabit, observed social inequality and what seemed to be the result of corruption processes. Not with the aim of developing an activist resistance of a local nature, but as a way of establishing their own interpretations and reviving old memories of their country, which would bring them closer, albeit fictitiously, to their own landscapes, now destroyed, and still in search of proposals for restructuring of reality that could overcome the circumstances of an individual experience and become collectively relevant also in other geographies”, is how it’s described in the exhibition text sent to JORNAL DE LEIRIA.

“The artists were involved in a process of artistic investigation around fictitious memories that have as a common denominator the concept of Traumascapes, by the Ukrainian, Jewish and Australian author Maria Tumarkin. The cultural historian, essayist and novelist describes, in a book precisely entitled Traumascapes, the history, destiny and power of places, marked by pain, violence and loss”, reads in the text.

“In the world we inhabit, these places are everywhere – they are sites of terrorist attacks, natural and industrial catastrophes, genocide, exile, ecological and urban degradation, political oppression, restrictions on freedom, communal dismay, and in extreme cases, war. What fate will these and other places of suffering and loss have? Could it be that, instead of being swallowed up by devastation and despair, they could emerge as fundamental cultural landmarks in defining a different future for humanity and the planet? How do these dispersed universes resist, what connections do they promote, what memories do they preserve, what power do they produce when they operate together and break the boundaries of any political authority, allowing themselves, through art and culture, to destroy the prevailing ideological assumptions in joint, polycentric and transnationals?” asks the organisation in the press release.

The Longing as Struggle exhibition will be open from March 31st to May 5th and can be visited on Fridays between 6 pm and 10 pm and on Saturdays between 3 pm and 7 pm.

Previously, the first exhibition hosted by Central-Periférica, entitled Temporary Corner, by Kamila Yanar, opened in July 2022, evoked the conflict with Russia since 2014 and narrated the stories of people forced to leave their homes, in Donbass, where the artist herself is from.

In addition to Kamila Yanar, the first group housed in the Central-Peripheral also included Oleksii Voitikh, Valerie Karpan, Maryna Khrypun and Yehor Poe.

In a conversation with JORNAL DE LEIRIA, in July 2022, when the space was inaugurated, they announced their interest in “communicating Ukrainian culture”, “sharing knowledge” and activating “cultural diplomacy”.

The artists’ residence in Alcobaça, considered an emergency residence, is supported by the organisation Artists at Risk and Fundação Oriente.

The cultural organisation Babel is a non-profit association whose mission is to generate opportunities for research, production of knowledge and learning in the fields of contemporary art, architecture and the environment.

The Central-Periférica project is coordinated by Margarida Saraiva (curator and president of Babel) and Tiago Quadros (architect), who guarantee the general and artistic direction, with the production direction in charge of Ana Margarida Battaglia Abreu, plastic artist trained in Caldas da Rainha.

At Central-Periférica they intend to establish a safe place for the development of a programme created by the artists themselves.

In conversation with JORNAL DE LEIRIA in July last year, Margarida Saraiva pointed out that artistic residencies “offer time, space and resources to artists so that they can create”, but “also have an impact on local communities”.

The objective is to materialise a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary production space, with work areas, cafeteria and gallery, as well as accommodation for 10 artists at the same time in which artistic and non-artistic disciplines coexist, in order to support the creative fabric of the central and western region of Portugal, in conjunction with other national and international peripheries.

Located in the historic centre of Alcobaça, with limits defined by the river Alcôa and Jardim do Amor, the Central-Periférica includes, in addition to a house, a garden of about 1,000 square meters.
