PRESS TEXT

In English (translation):

“Longing as Struggle” brings together Ukrainian art in the Central-Peripheral

“Longing as Struggle” is the title of the exhibition that can be visited at the Central-Periférica, in Alcobaça, until the 5th of next month. Organized by BABEL – Cultural Organization, the exhibition opened on the 31st and presents a selection of works in photography, video, drawing and installation by Ukrainian artists Valerie Karpan, Oleksandra Lytvyn, Maryna Marinichenko, Clemens Poole, Yehor Polishchuk, Oleksii Voitikh and Kamila Yanar, who chose Alcobaça to take refuge from the war that ravaged their country.

The works on display are the result of an artistic residency that aimed to “establish their own interpretations” and “revive old memories” of Ukraine that “brought artists closer, even if fictitiously, to their own landscapes, now destroyed”. The initiative also aimed to “search for proposals for restructuring reality that could overcome the circumstances of an individual experience and become collectively relevant in other geographies”, says the organization through a statement sent to the CISTER REGION.

“The artists were involved in a process of artistic investigation around fictitious memories that have as a common denominator: the concept of Traumascapes, by the Ukrainian, Jewish and Australian author Maria Tumarkin”, adds the president of BABEL- Cultural Organization, Margarida Saraiva. During this artistic residency that began last May and was supported by the Artists at Risk organization and Fundação Oriente, the seven artists explored the ruins of industrial complexes in the region, observed the urban peripheries, looked for signs of deterioration in their own residences and also observed social inequality and what seemed to them to result from corruption processes.

The “Longing as Struggle” exhibition can be visited on Fridays from 6 pm to 10 pm, and also on Saturdays from 3 pm to 7 pm.
