L’Écart is an artist-run centre dedicated to contemporary art that disseminates all disciplines of the broad visual arts field in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. It supports professional artists who have a sustained contemporary art practice. L’Écart is a site for artist residencies, research and creation.
It manages and is the owner of a 20,000 square feet building. It operates on a social economy model and offers artists services such as production spaces, specialized equipment, housing and a documentation centre.
It produces national and international events and publishes publications. It fosters the professionalization of emerging artists and facilitates exchanges between artists from its region and the national artistic milieu. It pays exhibition fees (CARFAC), professional honorariums, subsistence costs, travel costs for artists and artwork shipping costs and offers a gamut of material and human resources. It produces the Biennale d’art performatif de Rouyn-Noranda, an international event in performance and interdisciplinary art.
