Artists at Risk (AR) is glad to be launching a new internship opportunity for students in the Arts and Social Sciences.

This internship is an ideal opportunity for a passionate, motivated student with a focus on human rights, art, global affairs, international development and/or activism to gain experience working with an internationally renowned network-institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts.

An AR Intern will work in close collaboration with the AR-Secretariat, assisting on a range of tasks and projects that include crafting email newsletters, assisting artists-in-residence at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki, public advocacy campaigns for persecuted artists from around the world, grant applications and reporting for governmental and non-governmental partners and more.

The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who works well both independently and as part of a team. You will be fully proficient in using online applications such as Google Workspace and all its internal tools such as Sheets and Docs. You will be interested in contributing to all tasks big and small which it takes to build and develop an international NGO within a small but extremely busy team. While broadening your own horizons and gaining professional experience in your field of study, AR is interested in new initiatives and may offer opportunities for growth. A fluent grasp of English and Finnish are required, while additional languages are an asset given AR’s international profile and diverse range of partners.

Tasks include:

  • Assisting with Perpetuum Mobile’s (PM) and Artists at Risk (AR)’s EU project management tasks

  • Assisting with grant applications and reporting

  • Assisting artists in residence at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki and remotely

  • Assisting to plan and organise events

  • Assisting to plan and organise residencies

  • Assigned projects and tasks

  • Assisting with Perpetuum Mobile’s (PM) and Artists at Risk (AR)’s public relations tasks, including drafting newsletters and updating the website

  • Communications with local partners

  • Translation work (Finnish, English)

Workplace

Based largely online out of Helsinki, Finland. The AR/PM Office/Studio/Commons Space is located in the Venetsia Building in Lapinlahti, Helsinki.

Conditions and Requirements

This is a full-time paid internship (€ 1,331 monthly salary) for students entitled to internship support from their institution.

Starting date: 5th of February 2024 (exact start date open to negotiation)

Length: 2-3 months (internship period).

AR is dedicated to mapping the field of persecuted visual art practitioners, facilitating safe passage from their countries of origin, hosting them at “AR-Residencies” and curating related projects. Artists at Risk (AR) has an extensive network of international partners in the fields of human rights and the arts. AR has established twenty residencies for persecuted artists in seventeen countries since 2013. AR also works with a range of international human rights organizations, including among others PEN International as well as several country-chapters, Freemuse, SafeMuse the Martin Roth Initiative and the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN).
