Art and Dissent: Join us for a powerful conversation about art and resistance at Art Cologne on 8 November 2024.

  • Maria Alekhina (Pussy Riot), fresh off her co-curated Velvet Revolution exhibition at Munich’s Haus der Kunst.
  • Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky, Co-Directors of Artists at Risk (AR)
  • Julia Moebus-Puck, director of the new Vienna Actionism Museum (WAM), probing the edges of radical artistic expression.
  • Moderated by Kolja Reichert, chief curator at K21 Kunstsammlung NRW.

In a world where global political currents put increasing pressure on artists, many are called to take a stance. Yet, while some find refuge within representation or the art market, others face real threats, taking bold risks to stand for political beliefs and activism, even in unstable political systems or under precarious conditions.

Enter Artists at Risk (AR), a global organization founded in 2013 to support persecuted artists and defend artistic freedom and human rights. AR has supported prominent figures like Pussy Riot’s founders Maria Alekhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova, Somali pop star Lil Balil, Vietnamese dissident Mai Khoi, and Egyptian poet Galal El-Behairy.

The talk will be held in English and will explore the following key questions artists are faced with today:
How can artistic resistance be articulated today? What does it mean to align creative work with political conviction? How can artists empower, protect, and learn from one another? And how to take social and political responsibility, shaping civil courage through art?
