Hold The Handrail, Mind The Gap

HALLE 6 Basement

Time passed neither too fast nor too slow. After leaving Hong Kong in a rush, Munich became my first stop in Europe. With so many things out of my control, I was fortunate enough to settle down at HALLE 6 for almost a year. Before the end of the residency, I will be holding an exhibition in the basement of HALLE 6 from 22 November to 5 December.

«…watching the world disappear as if on a journey of no return».

On the train to Munich, while reading a letter from a friend in prison, I came across a line from a poem (Things I Didn’t Know I Loved) written by the Turkish poet Nâzım Hikmet in exile. A series of photographs bearing the title of the line will be the prelude to the exhibition. This will be followed by dozens of photographs pairing scenes from Hong Kong and Germany, an installation of collages of sounds collected in both places, and a video experimenting with audiovisual sensory memories, which together will form the conclusion of this transitional period.

For the closing event, I have invited my friend Bei San Q Nan, a noise musician from Taiwan, to perform in the dark basement. Please hold the handrail and walk down the steps.

This exhibition is made possible by the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich, Artist at Risk (AR) and HALLE 6.

Q Nan is a noise musician from Taiwan. For him, sound is a means of creating an atmosphere in which the listener can bring in his or her own emotions and self-interpretation of what they are hearing.

He has performed at various venues in Taiwan and has been invited to perform in Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong.
