Meet Artem, known by his creative pseudonym The Exchange of Skills (full name omitted due to security reasons), a Russian dissident artist currently in AR-Residence in Bonn, Germany.
Despite challenges, Artem continues composing music to support Ukraine, with proceeds from streaming platforms donated to the 12th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. Through his social media, he also organizes efforts to collect critical supplies for the Ukrainian military, including equipment for combat missions.
Artem’s art is a powerful critique of the Russian government and military. His latest project, The Saga of the Witch and the Wolf, blends a medieval fairy tale with modern-day realities, drawing a poignant parallel between a wolf protecting his beloved witch and Ukrainian soldiers defending their homes and families.
His creative process is deeply personal: writing lyrics on his phone, collaborating on instrumentals with a friend in Khmelnitsky, recording in local studios, and sending tracks to Ukraine for final production.
“I face a prison sentence for [activism], and there can be no question of returning to Russia,” Artem shares. Despite the danger and uncertainty, his work aims to draw global attention to the crisis in Ukraine and inspire others – especially prominent artists – to take action.
