PUBLIC CALL for ecologists at risk in AFRICA
We are pleased to announce our first public call for ecologists at risk living in Africa.
Ecologists at Risk (ER) is a sister-programme of Artists at Risk (AR) situated at the intersection of ecology, art and culture. ER supports eco-defenders at high risk, who sustain, protect or defend natural ecosystems through their artistic or cultural practices.
By defending the guardians of the natural world, we defend and amplify the voices to protect our planet.
Applicants should fill in the form at this link. For those in need of highest digital-security, please see this. Please do not attempt to contact us via other channels. Note that applications concerning anything but significant current risks for work at the intersection of ecology with art and culture are not eligible, and no response can be expected.
An international jury will select ER-Residents for both short and medium-term residencies, following background checks, risk-assessment, capacity evaluations of the ER Secretariat. It is appointed by the co-directors of ER with guidance from the ER International Advisory Council.
We encourage all those working at the intersection of ecology with arts and culture in Africa to share this Public Call and seize this opportunity to join us in fostering a resilient and sustainable future. Together, let’s amplify our voices to protect our planet.
What is Ecologists at Risk (ER)?
Ecologists at Risk (ER) is a residency-platform at the intersection of ecology, art and culture. ER supports eco-defenders at high risk, who sustain, protect or defend natural ecosystems through their artistic or cultural practices.
Ecologists at Risk (ER) was launched by Perpetuum Mobile (PM) in 2019 as part of its Artists at Risk (AR) platform. Since 2013, Artists at Risk (AR) has given material support and geographically relocated over 870 high-risk cultural professionals in cooperation with over 320 residency-network hosts worldwide.
Through Public Calls, research and tapping into local knowledge, the ER-network identifies and takes up contact with eco-defenders at high risk. Following background-checks, risk-assessment, prioritisation, and evaluation of hosting-capacity, selected ER-Residents are offered a selection of resources, often including a short or medium-length temporary relocation to an ER-Residency within the ER-Network. These regional (and occasionally international) relocations to ER’s ‘safe havens’ provide rest and respite, and offer opportunities for the continuation of their ecological causes. ER-Residences are often run by specialised hosting organisations which work with ER to curate projects that address ecological challenges, usually in direct exchange with their local communities.
Perpetuum Mobilε (PM) is an international NGO which brings together art, engaged practice and inquiry. It acts as a conduit and engine to re-imagine certain historical, theoretical and practical paradigms in fields which often exist in disparate institutional frames and territories. PM has developed longer-term thematic platforms including the Re-Aligned Project, Perpetual Pavilion, Perestroika Project, The Arts Assembly, Artists at Risk (AR) and Ecologists at Risk (ER). Perpetuum Mobile (PM) has been honoured with several awards, including the State Prize of Finland and the Civi Europaeo Praemium of the European Parliament.
