PUBLIC CALL for ecologists at risk in Latin America and the Caribbean
We are pleased to announce our first public call for ecologists at risk from Latin America and the Caribbean. These are artists, activists or cultural professionals experiencing significant threats to their freedom of expression and activities, or who face risk to life and limb due to their ecological engagement.
Applicants should fill the form at this link. For those in need of a higher digital-security, please see this. Do not attempt to contact us via other channels.
Please note that only applications addressing significant current risks at the intersection of ecology, art, and culture are eligible. Other inquiries will not receive a response.
An international jury will select ER-Residents for both short and medium-term residencies, following background checks, risk-assessment, and capacity evaluations by the ER Secretariat. The jury is appointed by the co-directors of Perpetuum Mobile (PM), the entity that operates ER, and with guidance from ER’s International Advisory Council.
We encourage all those working at the intersection of ecology with arts and culture in Latin America and the Caribbean to share this Public Call to support eco-defenders and indigenous communities at risk.
What is Ecologists at Risk (ER)?
Ecologists at Risk (ER) is an at-risk-residency platform at the intersection of ecology and culture. ER supports eco-defenders at high risk, whose life and/or work is to sustain, protect or defend natural ecosystems through their cultural or artistic practices.
The Ecologists at Risk (ER) initiative was launched by Perpetuum Mobile (PM) in 2019 as part of its Artists at Risk (AR) platform. Since 2013, Artists at Risk (AR) has geographically relocated and given material support to over 940 high-risk cultural professionals in cooperation with over 300 residency hosts worldwide. We hope that our experience will enable the ER platform to have a significant impact, in the field of ecology and environmental defense.
Through local knowledge, research and public calls, the ER-network identifies and makes contact with eco-defenders at high risk. Following background-checks, risk-assessment and evaluation of hosting-capacity, selected ER-Residents are offered resources and short or medium-length temporary relocations to ER’s at-risk-residences. These regional (and occasionally intercontinental) relocations to ER’s “safe havens” provide rest and respite, and offer opportunities for the continuation of their work on ecology related causes. ER Residencies are often run by specialised hosting organisations which work with ER to curate projects that address ecological challenges of their own focus, often working directly with local communities.
Perpetuum Mobilε (PM) is an international NGO that brings together art, engaged practice, and inquiry. It serves as a conduit and engine to re-imagine historical, theoretical, and practical paradigms across fields which often operate within separate institutional frameworks and territories. PM has developed longer-term thematic platforms including the Re-Aligned Project, Perpetual Pavilion, Perestroika Project, The Arts Assembly, Artists at Risk (AR) and Ecologists at Risk (ER). Perpetuum Mobile (PM) has been honoured with several awards, including the State Prize of Finland and the Civi Europaeo Praemium of the European Parliament.
