Open Call: The State of the ART(ist) 2025

The State of the ART(ist) invites international artists working under existential threat to apply to their Open Call by 31 May 2025!

The 2025 edition of the initiative explores the intersections of art, activism, and resistance. As we live in a time of escalating crises, the State of the ART(ist) seeks to highlight artistic practice that both documents and intervenes.

A jury selects State of the ART(ist) awardees from the Open Call. Artists at Risk (AR)’s Co-Directors Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen have participated in the jury since 2022 and will participate again this year.

The initiative is a collaborative project between the Austrian Federal Ministry of European and International Affairs and Ars Electronica. It aims to provide concrete financial support and visibility to artists endangered by political repression, social inequality, war, environmental disasters or the effects of digital surveillance.

The winning project, as well as selected works by the Award of Distinction winners and Honorary Mentions, will be shown in a physical exhibition at the Ars Electronica Festival 2025, which takes place from 3 to 7 September in Linz, Austria.

🗓️ Submission deadline: 31 May 2025
