Kholod Hawash, AR-Alumna, opens a new show at Caisan Galleria in Helsinki

Kholod Hawash’s exhibition “Veil” opens on June 5th and focuses on women’s freedom in the Middle East and beyond.

“Veil” takes a stand against oppression and persecution, through referents and symbols such as the uncovering and cutting of women’s hair. These are both strong and subtle protests, especially against male dominance and repressive religious customs. It is important to remember that these “soft protests” are not easy, as the violent power of the oppressive clergy is based on their sanctity of power.

Hawash’s intricate artistry is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of her homeland, Iraq. Her vibrant, hand-stitched textile works transform landscapes, symbols, and narratives from her past into bold allegories of freedom and resilience. Hawash was one of the artists whose works were displayed at the Artists at Risk Pavilion. Artists. Risks. Humans. Rights. in Venice last year, and previously garnered acclaim at ARS22 at Kiasma, the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2024), and with an Honorary Mention of the State of the ART(ist) Prize at Ars Electronica. Her works are found at Kiasma and EMMA, among other museums and collections.
