Meet Joe Lyimo, also known as Forever Young Joy, a Tanzanian musician whose soulful practice blends storytelling, emotional resonance and rich melodic traditions. We are thrilled to announce his AR-Residency at our new partner, the MuseumsQuartier Wien!
Joe arrived in Vienna in May to begin his residency, where he is creating new work drawing from his lived experiences and shaped by a wide range of musical influences. As a transgender artist, Joe’s music speaks to themes of identity, resilience and the strength to create in the face of adversity.
Joe’s artistic journey has unfolded through significant challenges. As a transgender musician in Tanzania, he has endured recurring threats and acts of discrimination that have made it unsafe to continue living and creating in his home country. His music emerges as a response to these conditions, offering a necessary space of expression, survival and healing.
📅 Save the date: On June 17th, Joe will present a live performance at the MQ Summer Stage, inviting audiences to connect with his powerful voice and presence. Find more details here: https://www.mqw.at/en/program/mq-artist-in-residence-joe-lyimo
Joe Lyimo’s AR-MQW Residency is the first in a new partnership between Artists at Risk (AR) and MuseumsQuartier Wien (MQW).
