Introducing new AR-Resident Matt Shally!

Artists at Risk (AR) is excited to announce the residency of Georgian actor and director Matt Shally at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki!

Matt is known for his vibrant work in film, drag, theatre, and fashion performances, often incorporating personal insights and experience and unapologetic self-expression. He performs and directs shows and concept performances in the Georgian underground scene, which often highlight the resilience of the Georgian queer community, despite ongoing societal challenges.

While Georgia has an anti-discrimination law that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the Georgian parliament has followed the Russian example, banning “LGBTQ+ propaganda”, same-sex marriage and adoption to encourage a negative attitude towards LGBTQ+ persons.

Matt joined us earlier this year as an AR-Resident to provide him with a safe space to practise his creative work without risk – and has been enjoying summer in Finland, engaging with various artistic scenes and working on multiple projects. During his residency, Matt is continuing his work in both Helsinki and Tbilisi, working primarily on creative theatrical projects and supporting the Georgian LGBTQ+ community.

We wish Matt a successful stay in Helsinki and look forward to following his creative endeavours during his residency!

Matt Shally’s residency at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki is funded by Artists at Risk (AR) with the support of the City of Helsinki, The Arts Promotion Centre Finland, and our partner Ria Keburia Foundation. Additional thanks to Villa Eläintarha. Thank you for your generous support!
