In an era where crisis has become the status quo, what is the role of art when survival itself is at stake? On Wednesday 10 September at 4.30 pm, Marita will join a panel to discuss “The Claims of Art from a World of Crisis”, as part of the 13th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art at ERIAC – European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture.

Marita will take part alongside Zasha Colah – 13th Berlin Biennale curator, artistic director of Ar/Ge Kunst and lecturer in Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milan; Selma Selman – visual and performance artist from Bosnia and Herzegovina of Romani origin; and Valentina Viviani – Argentinian artist, part of the feminist artist collective Poly Marchantia and Assistant Curator of the 13th Berlin Biennale, moderated by Timea Junghaus – art historian, curator, and a leading voice of the Roma cultural and political movement, as well as the Curator of “Paradise Lost”, the first Roma Pavilion in Venice.
The conversation invites thinkers, artists, and curators to explore how art functions as a site of resistance, a space for critical imagination, and as cultural evidence – the artistic action, its orality, and forms of transmission, recognised as a fundamental part of history and world making.
The talk asks: If art exists, most explicitly, in moments of crisis and catastrophe, what are its languages and preoccupations? Is it what we expect, or can even understand fully in the present? In an era where crisis has become the status quo, we ask which are the artistic claims of our times?
The panel will not seek definitive answers, but rather provoke a rethinking of the possibilities of art in the present moment, in a time when uncertainty is our only certainty.
The 13th Berlin Biennale, passing the fugitive on, presents more than 60 artistic positions across four venues until September 14, 2025. The artists’ events form an integral part of the exhibition, investigating fugitivity. Together, they comprise the Encounters series. From September 10 until 14 these events take place as part of Berlin Art Week 2025.
