The newly conceived REFUGE pavilion by Ives Maes commissioned by Be-Part, a Belgian art institute, has invited Artists at Risk (AR)’s co-directors Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky for a conversation with and film-screening by the renowned Congolese photographer and AR-Alumna Pamela Tulizo. The discussion wil be moderated and translated by Kathleen Weyts.

Tulizo’s powerful photographic practice explores women’s identities and representation, gender inequality, conflict and social justice. From her internationally recognised series Double Identité, Enfer Paradisiaque and Matrice to the founding of Tulizo Elle Space, a cultural and training centre for women and girls in Goma, her work creates space for stories that are too often unheard.
The population of Goma has been under high risk and sustained repression given the war and occupation of the region by the M23 militia, which has furthermore diverted the government of the DRC’s resources from fighting another insurgency in eastern Congo of the ISIS-aligned ADF.
The event is co-hosted, and being held on the occasion of the annual research day of the KASK School of Arts.
