HRD-Resident Godwin Toko Godwin

Godwin Toko is a Ugandan lawyer, writer and activist focused on democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Uganda. He is the Deputy Team Leader and a founding member of the Agora Centre for Research, an activist organisation focused on human rights and political accountability in Uganda and the wider East African region. Since its founding in 2023, Agora has contributed to Uganda’s public accountability discourse and promoted human rights through social media.

Godwin is also a writer and has published opinion pieces in The Daily Monitor and The Observer, two Ugandan newspapers. Outside Uganda, he has written for ZAM Magazine in South Africa and the Centre for Nonviolent Conflict. He is also one of the editors of Agora’s first full-length book, Uganda’s Transition Question: A Conversation with Opinion Leaders, published in early 2026.

As a lawyer, Godwin has been involved in a number of cases concerning human rights, including the rights of persons with disabilities, civil and political rights, and the right to education in Uganda.

During his time in Helsinki, Godwin hopes to build networks around human rights and political accountability, continue his writing, and take time to rest before returning to Uganda to continue his work.
