Artists at Risk (AR) gives its warmest welcome to Mustarinda! Mustrinda joins the AR-Finland Network with its residency programme.
Mustarinda is located at the top of the second highest hill in Kainuu, on the north-eastern edge of the Paljakka Nature Park. It is surrounded by valuable primeval forests, in some places completely intact. Paljakka is also one of the snowiest areas in Finland.
Families can be accommodated in the larger bedrooms or two separate rooms. We have also one bedroom, where you can stay with pets. Unfortunately, due to reasons concerning possible allergies, pets cannot be in shared areas of the house (except service dogs).
Mustarinda house is run by Mustarinda association members and volunteers. Residency entrants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Hyrynsalmi. Residency starts on 1st weekday of the month (when we can pick you up from village) and departure is on the last weekday of the month. Grocery shopping in the Hyrynsalmi village upon agreement ca. once a week. We also try to support local food producers by making collective orders with the residency group. Everyone is responsible for their own cooking (incl. special diets), but we often also make common meals with the residency group, if it suits the current group.
Mustarinda Association fosters natural and cultural diversity by bringing together people from different backgrounds through workshops, exhibitions, residency programming, publications and happenings. Mustarinda is a not-for-profit association founded in 2009 by artists and researchers. The Mustarinda house is powered by geothermal heating, solar panels and wind power, and we work on our energy-consumption collectively. Mustarinda works largely with volunteer work. We hope that the residency guests take part to some of shared tasks in the house like cleaning, gardening in the summer, or snow work in the winter time.
During the residency months there might be some short-time workshops or visitors in the house, and we also wish children and pets welcome depending on timing, if agreed in good time before the residency. The communal life in the house can be very lively. If you’re looking for a very quiet place to work, please mention it in your application.
