About us
ARTISTS at RISK is a network-institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts. As a platform dedicated to persecuted art practitioners, the work of AR encompasses mapping and advocacy of arts professionals at risk, addressing their practical needs and advancing their artistic practice. To achieve this, carefully selected AR-Residents are granted short or longer term temporary relocations at Artists at Risk (AR) Residencies around the world. AR-Residents are invited as honoured visiting arts professionals. These are art practitioners who not only greatly enrich their host countries, but are at the heart of rebuilding their often war-torn countries of origin.
ARTISTS at RISK is designed as an institution of global scope, and is undergoing rapid growth. Expanding from its established residency programme in Helsinki, it has developed AR-Residencies in 26 residences in 19 countries. Artists at Risk was the first residency institution of its kind dedicated to all art forms, and from its inception has accepted candidates from fields including the visual arts, film, theatre, dance and music. As an international network of residencies that includes close curatorial support, AR remains unique.
Artists at Risk has received international recognition for its work. In 2020, AR was featured on the first SUBSTANCE 100 list. In 2017, AR was awarded the Thematic State Prize of Finland. In 2016, AR-Safe Haven Helsinki won the Annual Art Act Award in Finland. In October 2016, Perpetuum Mobile (PM) / Artists at Risk (AR) was honoured with the CIVI EUROPAEO PRAEMIUM (“European Citizen’s Prize”) by the European Parliament.
