ARTISTS at RISK (AR) is a mondial institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts. AR is dedicated to mapping the field of persecuted visual art practitioners, facilitating their safe passage from their countries of origin, hosting them at “AR-Residencies” and curating related projects, including the “AR Pavilion”.
Artists, curators, critics, musicians, theatre and film-makers and other art-practitioners are targets of politically motivated threats and persecution in great parts of the world. Perpetuum Mobile (PM) initiated Artists at Risk (AR) in 2013 in Helsinki as a platform and network to support these art practitioners in times of need. This encompasses enabling their safe exit from countries of origin; the procurement of travel documents; providing legal assistance; and matching ARs with so-called “AR-Residencies”.
The AR-Network comprises a growing number operational residencies. The long-established “Helsinki Model” developed at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki, and anchored at HIAP/former NIFCA, has served as an example for initiatives for AR-Residencies in Berlin, Athens, Saari Residence FI, Malmö SE, Reykjavik, Oslo, Gnästä SE , the Provence, Barcelona, Belgrade and with recent pilot residencies at Wysing Art Centre in Cambridge UK and Abuja, NI. On this model, AR develops cooperation-programmes with artist-in-residency centres, art/film/theatre unions, cities and human-rights networks which help provide artists at risk a safe place of temporary relocation.
Perpetuum Mobile (PM), which initiated and directs Artists at Risk (AR) furthermore has built extensive networks for supporting and working with AR Residents, and curates projects including their art.
Perpetuum Mobile (PM), which initiated and directs Artists at Risk (AR) furthermore has built extensive international networks for supporting and working with AR Residents, and curates projects including their artistic work, including events, conferences and the dedicated “AR Pavilion” — the first at the Athens Biennale; parallel to the Istanbul Biennial; at Matadero-Madrid; and now in Berlin — which showcases the artistic practices of Artists-at-Risk (AR) Residents.
