Artists at Risk (AR) is pleased to introduce the fifth talk in the AR TALKS series. AR-Alumnus Bariş Seyitvan, an independent Kurdish artist and curator from Diyarbakir, Turkey, will be speaking about his latest work.

Seyitvan’s professional experience spans twenty years of work with arts organizations, individual artists and nonprofits with a focus on contemporary art and migration in the Middle East. His work explores and reflects on the trans-national reality of the global Kurdish community.

Exhibitions he has curated touch on history, geography and politics, as well as the broader cultural themes of language, exile, gender and displacement – themes that have long been part of the discourse of Kurdish art. Seyitvan maintains relationships with an extensive number of Middle Eastern artists, at home and in exile, and has organized exhibitions in cities around the world.

This Thursday, August 25, Baris Seyitvan will be speaking about the difficulties Kurdish artists face and and struggling with. How do we see the role of contemporary art in social political changes? What price do we pay for our own fight for human rights through our artistic practice? These are among the first questions he asks.

This AR TALK is kindly accommodated by Floating U̶n̶i̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶t̶y̶, a self organized space and group, where practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds meet to collaborate, co-create and imaginatively work towards futures. Its mission is to open, maintain, and take care of this unique site while bringing non-disciplinary, radical, and collaborative programs to the public.

This initial Berlin edition of AR TALKS is conceived and moderated by Giorgi Rodionov, an artist and curator, and co-founder of Artists at Risk (AR)-Tbilisi at Untitled Gallery Tbilisi. The edition was launched at Moos, and continues at Floating U̶n̶i̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶t̶y̶ where every Thursday, we gather to discuss the risks and challenges art practitioners at risk face in our troubled times.

AR TALKS is a decentralized series which introduces artists, curators, and cultural professionals hosted by AR-Residences, or affiliated with AR-Network, to a wider audience. It follows in the footsteps of Perpetuum Mobile(PM)’s longstanding MOBILE Talks series.
