ACN Barcelona – CCCB will be hosting a very special theatrical premiere on 4 March to coincide with the first anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The actor Aleksei Yudnikov will perform the monologue ‘Ma mare i la invasió total’ by the Ukrainian Sasha Denisova, a piece worked on from exile as part of the first Barcelona Artistes en Risc residency, organised by the ICUB and the CCCB itself with the international platform Artists at Risk. Both artists developed their careers in Moscow while remaining politically critical, but with the outbreak of the war they had to seek refuge outside Russia. Iudnikov spoke this Monday about the difficulty of creating while part of his family is still in Kyiv, but he celebrated being able to continue working in freedom.

The Barcelona Artists at Risk project is a joint initiative of various institutions and entities to take in artists in situations of risk under the banner of an artistic residency in Barcelona, in this case at Fabra i Coats.

For six months now, the residency has been providing accommodation for the actor Aleksei Yudnikov, specifically since July 2022 when he arrived from Helsinki, where he was also hosted by Artists at Risk after his departure from Moscow in March following the outbreak of the invasion of Ukraine. The residency was also held by the playwright and theatre director Sasha Denisova, in her case for the months of September, October and November last year.

Both are of Ukrainian origin but have studied and developed their artistic careers in Moscow in different places, often linked to the Teatre Doc of the independent theatre scene. Now, in exile, they have worked together on a text that is also documentary-based, specifically on the life experience of the author’s mother, who at 81 years of age lives alone in Kyiv.

Aleksei Yudnikov explained this Monday that the work is very intimate for him, because his mother and one of his brothers are now living in the Ukrainian capital. The current situation, as a creator in exile living in a city like Barcelona while his family is in the midst of a conflict, has produced a “cognitive dissonance” that is not easy to bear. “The play can help me understand how they live there, and that’s my role here and how I can contribute to peace; it’s going to be a kind of therapy to get through this bad patch”, the performer reflected this morning.

Yudnikov left Moscow as soon as the Russian military intervention in his country began. He did not hesitate, and although he does not want to judge whether it is better to oppose the regime from the outside or from the inside, he is clear that from Barcelona “it is easier to tell the truth”. However, professional colleagues who remain in Russia have been suffering for some years now, and particularly now, from government persecution, in some cases with arrests and accusations of treason. The Teatre Doc itself has been forced to change its location and is working there with great difficulty, he said.

The actor left Moscow with a small suitcase and a folding bicycle, leaving four children, as well as friends and relatives. He was welcomed with a first residence in Helsinki, and from there he travelled to Venice, where he starred in a protest performance at the Biennale of Art in the Russian Pavilion inspired by the play ‘The Nose’ by the writer Nikolai Gogol. Months later he was chosen by Barcelona Artists at Risk to be the first artist at this kind of residency.

Today the actor says he is grateful to be able to continue doing the work he wants to do here, to say the things he wants to say and with the intention of reaching “the hearts of everyone who has a sensibility”. The mayor for Culture, Jordi Martí, said that the coordination between all the actors who have made the project possible is a “complex” task, but one that aims to enable artists from all over the world to continue their artistic project in Barcelona in conditions “that their own country cannot offer them at the moment”. Martí said that there will be more, but did not say when the next residency will be. He also thanked the CCCB for echoing dissident proposals and persecuted artists.

Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen, co-founders and co-directors of Artists at Risk, pointed out that their work began some years ago and not after the Russian intervention in Ukraine. In fact, they recalled that in Barcelona they have already carried out actions in support of the campaign ‘No Callarem’, also involved in the current residency, in relation to issues of freedom of expression and artists such as Pablo Hassel and Valtonyc. In addition, in 2019 they coordinated a residency at Konvent 0 with a Kenyan artist.

Nevertheless, the activists have recognised the expansion of “partners” that the war has brought. Before the conflict, Artists at Risk worked in 26 European cities. Today there are already 500.
