PRESS TEXT

In English (translation):

Reus observes a minute of silence for the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine

During the rally, the Declaration of the Network of Mayors and Mayoresses for the Peace of Catalonia was read

This Friday, February 24, several citizens of Reus gathered at the gates of the City Hall to observe a minute of silence and show the city’s solidarity with the Ukrainian population and its millions of displaced people.

Institutional statement

During the rally, the mayor and other councilors of the municipal corporation read the Declaration of the Network of Mayors and Mayoresses for the Peace of Catalonia on the occasion of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the following text:

«One year after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we express our deep concern about the prolongation of the conflict and the suffering it is causing to the civilian population. As representatives of cities and towns, we want to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian mayors and mayoresses and our support for all the victims of the conflict, while showing great respect for their courage and resilience.

As nuclear escalation has become intertwined with this conflict, with repeated threats by Russia to use nuclear weapons, the risks of indiscriminate destruction increase, with catastrophic consequences for people and the planet. That is why we call on the Russian government to stop its nuclear threat, as well as the constant violation of international humanitarian law. This is why we urge the international community to unequivocally denounce this immoral and dangerous behavior.

Our cities, with a citizenry in solidarity and committed to peace, partly marked by a local history of war and refuge, have offered support to people fleeing this conflict, who have been able to rely on legal and safe routes. We ask that this reality is not an exception and that anyone has the right to seek a better future without risking their lives to achieve it.

We pledge to continue collaborating to alleviate the suffering of the population and express our readiness to participate in the reconstruction of the country and the repair of the damage that has crossed the borders of Ukraine and is felt in the world, being especially significant in countries in Africa and the Middle East, with pre-existing humanitarian crises.

We ask the representatives of the countries of the world to raise their voices in favor of peace, solidarity and justice and to work together to build a more solid, inclusive and efficient multilateral system that makes these ideals possible. We need the international community to get involved in new diplomatic efforts to silence the weapons and preserve the lives and human rights of the citizens who are suffering the consequences of the war.

As we commit to playing our part in building a more peaceful Europe, we will support the actions that are taken to bring an end to the conflict and to achieve a world at peace and free of nuclear weapons.»

The war, in the theater

Reus City Council, through the Solidarity and Cooperation area of the Participation, Good Government and General Services department, is organising the presentation, in Ukrainian, of the play «My mother and the large-scale invasion», directed by Sasha Denisova and performed by Alexey Yudnikov, in the Reading Center on March 14 at 7:00 p.m. The work tells the story of those civilians who live day to day in the midst of conflict. Yudnikov will be the only performer on stage and will take on the shoes of nearly twenty characters.

It is a production of a Ukrainian company that is staying in Catalonia. The actor Alexey Yudnikov and the director and playwright Sasha Denysova had been working together for years in an independent theater in the center of Moscow, from where they conceived the scene as a space of resistance. Until the outbreak of the war with Ukraine, the theater’s works of social criticism drew intensified censorship from the Russian government. It was a theater very critical of power, opposed to Putin’s government and the Russian oligarchs. The theater was closed when the war began. With this situation, both applied for a residency at the NGO Artists at Risk, which, since 2013, has built a worldwide network to help persecuted artists fleeing oppression or war.

Currently, Alexey Yudnikov and Sasha Denysova are immersed in a creative process at Fabra i Coats, where they have been living and rehearsing since last July, with their minds on the war in Kyiv, where they still have relatives. In fact, they are working on a text inspired by the story of the author’s mother, Olga Ivanovna, 81, who refused to leave the family home in Kyiv when the conflict broke out and lives daily with drone attacks, trying to continue with her everyday life.
