This event organised by UNESCO’s Division for Gender Equality with its Culture and Emergencies Entity last Tuesday, examined the devastating impact of crises on women artists and cultural professionals, drawing on the preliminary results of UNESCO’s new Global Survey on Women, Culture and Emergencies, which AR and AR-Alumni took part in. Our co-directors @ivorstodolsky and @maritamuukkonen were invited to speak on AR’s work with female cultural  professionals – from Iran to Sudan – to inform this crucial discussion.

This event was honoured by the presence and active participation of @carolina_redondo (H.E. Carolina Arredondo), @culturas_cl (the Minister of Cultures, Arts and Heritage in Chile), @Hon. Peace Regis Mutuuzo, Minister of State for Gender and Culture of Uganda, and H.E. @Nina Obuljen Koržinek, @Minister of Culture and Media of Croatia.

@UNESCO’s very own ‘minister of culture’, also attended the entire session, insisting repeatedly on the significance of the topic and occasion:

“We must go further. Cultural policies that do not actively empower women and girls risk reinforcing existing inequalities and limiting the transformative power of culture itself”

@Ernesto Ottone R. Assistant Director-General for Culture, UNESCO

The event was hosted by @Begoña Lasagabaster, Director of the Division for Gender Equality, UNESCO and moderated by @Danielle Cliche, Chief of Policy and Research, Division for Gender Equality, UNESCO.
