Ksenia Peretrukhina (b.1972) is a Russian stage designer, visual artist, lecturer, contemporary theatre theorist and author of a series of workshops about stage space, ecology in theatre and social theatre. She’s a member of the independent theatre group Theatre of Mutual Operations.
Peretrukhina graduated from the Film Studies Faculty at The Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK), as well as from the School of Contemporary Art at the Russian State University, the School of Contemporary Art at the J. Soros Centre for Contemporary Art and the School of Theatre Leadership at the V. Meyerhold Theatre Centre. She is a co-founder of the outdoor video-art festival “PUSTO” («ПУСТО»), of which she acted as Art Director in 2002–2009.
Since 2000, Peretrukhina has worked as an visual artist and presented her work in solo and group exhibitions, as well as participated in various Russian and foreign projects, including in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Nizhnekamsk, Brussels, Hanover, Paris, New York and other cities in Russia and abroad. For example, she took part in the Moscow International Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2005 and the Havana Biennale of Contemporary Art in 2009.
Moreover, since 2005 Peretrukhina has worked as a stage designer for dramas in collaborations that include the Baltic Circle Festival (Helsinki), TINFO (Finland), Klockriketeatern (Helsinki), Tampere Workers’ Theatre, Espoo City Theatre, Vaba Lava Theater Center (Tallinn and Narva), Theater of Nations (Moscow), Alexandrinsky Theater (St. Petersburg), Theater-Theater (Perm), PRAKTIKA Theatre (Moscow), Moscow Art Theater, Gogol Center (Moscow), as well as with numerous independent venues. She worked on the play “Hotel California” at the Meyerhold Centre (Moscow), directed by Sasha Denisova, as well as with such illustrious directors as Dmitri Volkostrelov, Marat Gatsalov, Mikhail Ugarov, Georg Genoux and Ruslan Malikov. Since 2016, she has worked as a stage designer for opera houses and has сollaborated with Perm Opera and Ballet Theater (Perm), URAL Opera (Ekaterinburg) and Theater an der Wien (Vienna).
Peretrukhina is the laureate of the “Innovation” contemporary art prize (2020) and a nominee for the “Black Square” contemporary art prize and the “Kandinsky” art prize and is a repeated nominee and winner of the “Golden Mask” National Theatre Prize (2013, 2018, 2019).
January 2023 saw the premiere of Peretrukhina’s work in “A Short Episode in the Universal History of the Mushroom Civilization” at the Espoo City Theatre, directed by Essi Rossi and written by AR-Resident Mikhail Durnenkov. She is currently working on “Merimonsterit”, directed by Laura Ruohonen at the Tampere Workers’ Theatre in Finland.
